Uji Shrine was formerly called Rikyu Hachimangu (Kirihara Higeta-no-miya). According to the Chronicles of Japan, the deity Uji-no-Wakiiratsuko was a tragic prince who entered the Uji River because of a conflict with his elder brother Prince Osazaki (later Emperor Nintoku) over the imperial throne. The main shrine is from the Kamakura period. Other valuable cultural assets such as wooden guardian dogs and white masks have been handed down to the shrine.
